Hubby is the Big 4-5

Today is the hubby's 45th birthday.  Last year's post was about shoes and food, this year I'm going with sports and shoes.  Hubby grew up in Ohio, and I have learned more than I ever thought I wanted to know about the Ohio-Michigan rivalry.

There are a lot of Ohio fans at St. Someone's and the whole lot of them are obsessively crazy.  (BTW...the tennies are cuz the hubby doesn't wear heels.  The heels are for me, obviously)

Here's the thing.  The hubby is from Ohio, but he's a Michigan fan.  He's a traitor!  His family loves to call him when Michigan loses so they can rub it in.

He didn't go to either school, though.  He played football for The University of Akron.  Did you know that their team is The Zips, after the zipper factory?  And yet, their mascot is a kangaroo.  I am befuddled.  But!  Today is also Pedro's birthday!  Here he is supporting dad's school.

I've already mentioned the hubby's love of The Cowboys.  They're actually doing relatively well this year, and I'm fairly horrified that I know this.

Not Pedro, though.  He loves watching football with Dad.

His favorite basketball team is the LA Lakers.  The heels above were listed as wedding shoes.  That's a major fan right there.

We even found Pedro a basketball outfit.  It really is purple, even though it looks blue here.

And finally, the favorite baseball team is The Yankees.   He has had these favorites since he was a little boy.  I *think* he watched them all win their respective series one year and has loved them ever since.  I might be remembering that incorrectly.  I could look it up and see if that happened in a year in the 70s, but I'm lazy and I'd rather just snuggle this puppy curled up by my hip.

Pedro doesn't have a Yankees outfit yet.  We need to get him one.  And then we might have to get him his own chest of drawers to hold all of his clothes...

Happy Birthday, Hubby and Pedro!

Gritty

I don't really believe that absolutely everything happens for a reason, but it is interesting to look back at things and see how they've influenced my life after.  For instance, living in Texas for 3 years taught me how to eat grits.  There was a woman at church (I think her name was Betty, or some other appropriate Lutheran name) who always brought cheese grits to potlucks.  The recipe was in the church cookbook, so I started making it myself.  Although I changed the Velveeta to cheddar, which probably makes me less cool in the grits world.  Want to know what makes me REALLY uncool in the grits world?  I love to eat them with dried cranberries, brown sugar, and soy or almond milk.  This is a sacrilege, apparently.  You're supposed to eat them with your eggs and sausage, or plain with butter and salt.  What the heck am I telling you all of this for?  Because the hubby takes his grits very seriously.  He pretends he doesn't know about the cranberries and brown sugar so he doesn't have to divorce me, and I am perfectly capable of eating grits for breakfast with eggs and sausage because of my time in Texas.  (We had grits for breakfast this morning, hence this looooong explanation)  I'm not saying I would never have tried grits had I not lived in TX, but the cheese grits definitely eased me in.  Otherwise I'm pretty sure cereal mixed with eggs would have grossed me out completely.  So.  In honor of those 3 years, here are some Texas shoes for you:

University of Texas golf shoes.  I don't know if they are official golf shoes, or just golf shoes for a UT fan.  I do know that UT fans are crazy (don't hit me, UT fans, you know I love you).

Awwww...for your baby UT fan.  Everything is cuter on teeny tiny shoes.

Can't include UT without including Texas A&M, because their fans are just as crazy.  When I first moved to Texas I coudn't figure out why so many cars had  ATM stickers (I was thinking Automatic Teller Machine).  Yes, I was a dork who knew nothing about sports.

I always like the sparkly shoes.  If  I were to become a rabid sports fan, I would wear sparkly shoes in the colors of the team of my choice.

I actually went to a few Rangers games.  They were fun in that boring live baseball kind of way.  I like baseball, it's just slow, so then I don't pay attention and always miss when something exciting happens.

Finally!  Some Texas shoes that don't have anything to do with sports!

Aaaaaand back to sports.  I've already posted these, since the Cowboys are the hubby's favorite football team.  See?  Sparkly heels.  Fun.  Weird, but fun.

I won't leave out the Houston Texans.  Shut up, sports fans.  I don't care if you hate the Texans or you miss the Oilers, or you're just grumpy because someone peed in your cheerios this morning.  Man, sports fans are sooooo touchy.

Texas.  Met some really good friends there, got to live in a different part of the country, don't want to move back there.  I so did not fit in there.  But, I got to live with my awesome aunt!  And it taught me to eat grits!  And drink like a fish, but that is a completely different post...

Fantasy Football

The hubby loves football.  He played in college and the opening Sunday of the season (yesterday) is like Christmas morning for him.  He also loves fantasy football.  In fact, he's in 3 leagues this year.  He also decided I needed to be in a league.  It started out with him telling a friend of ours that I would be "happy" to join if they didn't have enough players.  I fervently prayed that there would be enough players, but alas, no such luck.  So I have a team.  I actually won my first game this week.  Next week I play the hubby.  Oy.  I really have no clue what I'm doing.  I don't like football, and have never really been able to figure it out no matter how much it is explained to me.  It's like my brain simply won't accept the information.  I went to one game in college only because the BFF said I had to.  I pay attention to peripherally to the Griz since they are my college team, but I couldn't tell you a single player currently on the team.

Anyway, the hubby likes The Cowboys.  This is kind of funny as I used to live in the Dallas area and have lots of friends who also like The Cowboys.  I have no team affiliations.  Today I decided to look up Cowboys shoes.

These actually aren't bad.  The one thing the team has going for them is their blue.  I might consider wearing these if the occasion arose.

Not so much these.  Still like the blue.  Even like the silver.  Way too spot on, though. I'm certain there is  time and place to wear these.  I just hope my feet don't need to attend.

Likewise these.  Take off the logo (yes, I know that defeats the purpose), and I would wear them.

Oh hell no.  They look insanely uncomfortable on top of being hideous.

I think I'll stick to wearing the hubby's Cowboys shirt as pjs.  He and the bear can rock the Cowboys gear.
