150 and 20,000

Today is the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln giving the Gettysburg Address.  I had to memorize it in 5th grade, so it's in my brain somewhere, but now basically all I can remember is the very first part.  In case you're like me, here is a refresher:

(Remember, you can click on the picture to see it bigger)  It's amazing how concise this speech is considering everything that was going on in the country with the Civil War.  Generally politicians are NEVER concise.  Go, Lincoln!  In honor of this anniversary, here are some shoes from 1863:

These are wedding shoes, and I think they're really cool.  I'm guessing someone's family had money, as I doubt shoes like this were very common during wartime.

Baby shoes, made with fabric from her father's uniform.

It never ceases to amaze me that people walked as much as they did in shoes like this.  I'm not saying new is always better, I'm just thinking of marching and walking and fighting and trying to stay warm in shoes with no arch support or decent insulation.  No, thank you.

On a completely unrelated note, this happened today:

20,004 pageviews!  Thanks everyone for helping me reach this new milestone!

Turquoise?

I redid my toes recently, and the bottle said the color was turquoise.  I thought it looked more green, and still do, but liked the color and went with it anyway.  What do you think?  Turquoise or more toward the green family?

Outside, in natural light, they look more green to me.

These are the shoes I wore to church today (not on all the way for the picture, which is why my toes are scrunched), and I definitely thought they looked green in comparison to the shoe, but in this picture, I'm leaning more toward turquoise again.  Go here for a better view of the shoe, although be prepared for creepy first.

Inside.  Bathroom light.  Turquoise background.  Looks pretty close the same color.  So what do I know?  Maybe the bottle was correct.

In other news, today marks the 6th month anniversary of writing this blog.  I started December 30th, and have only missed 1 day since then.  It's been fun.  Except for my mom, though (hi, Mom!), I'm not really sure anyone actually reads it.  Which is maybe OK, but it seems kind of silly to keep putting stuff out there if no one actually reads any of it.  My page views are definitely on a down-ward trend.  This isn't a pity party (what kind of shoes would I wear to a pity party?), just a throwing it out there kind of deal.  If you read on a regular basis, and would like to continue to read on a regular basis, would you let me know?  Thanks!

Witchy

The shoe calendar presented me with these this morning:

They are from 1985, but all I can see when I look at them is witch shoes.  It's the combination of the buckle and the extremely pointy toes.  Of course I then had to go searching for more witch shoes and here are a few of my favorite:

I wouldn't wear any of them on a normal day, but I would wear them for Halloween (although the green ones look potentially really uncomfortable).

These are not witch shoes, but I am a dork, and I love me some candy corn, so I think these are adorable.  They even have 2 candies on the heel that looks the fangs I always create with my candy corn.  I would totally wear these throughout the month of October if they came in adult sizes.

So, I am also a dork because I waited to publish today until I could publish this.

The Norwegian in me is required to tell you that of course it's not that big of deal...not bragging.  The other parts of me are like, screw that--yay!  Probably the different parts of my brain need some sort of family therapy or something.  And yes...I may or may not have obsessively hit refresh a million times this afternoon.  It was stuck at 9993 and 9998 FOREVER!

Woohoo!

I woke up to this news this morning:

Granted, a lot of blogs can get that in a month, a week, or even a day, but for my silly little shoe blog, I'm pretty impressed.  So thanks for hanging out with me!  I know who some of you are (hi, Mom!), but others are a mystery.  Which is good, mystery can be fun, but if you want, feel free to leave the occasional comment to let me know who you are/what you think.

In shoe news, I checked out shoe dazzle recently after someone at church asked me about it.  So far I'm not sure what I think, but I haven't really spent much time on it to figure things out.  This was the picture that greeted me when I logged on yesterday:

I tried to find a picture of just the shoes, but didn't have any luck.  They are really odd.  I keep expecting to see a little bird perched in there or something.  (Remember, you can always click on any picture to, ahem, "embiggen" it).  They are definitely different, that's for sure.  The necklace is also different and interesting, although I could never pull something like that off.  The headband is just plain ugly to me, though.  Also, is it me, or do those shoes like they are killer on the toes?  My toes are cramping in my tennies simply from looking at this picture.
